Forging Pathways for Better Outcomes: Engaging Community For Coordinated Care in Children With Cleft Lip and Palate

By attending this conference, you acquire information on Social Determinants of Health in a broad sense and how it is addressed in our Cleft Program. Additionally, information will be presented on Cleft Care for undocumented migrants and how it impacts care in Colorado. Requirements for care in each state will be touched on.

Other presentations include understanding various types of palate repair surgeries when they are indicated and usefulness. Speech presentation will address understanding patients with cleft resonance issues experiences and desires in receiving speech therapy – their lived experience. 

Target Audience

The target audience for this course are both Internal faculty members and community physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Registered Nurses, Psychologists, Social Workers, Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists and members of the Orthodontic and Dental Communities.

Learning Objectives

1| Identify the social determinants of health measures that impact the delivery of equitable healthcare for patients with cleft lip/palate and related craniofacial anomalies.
2| Discuss interviewing strategies that allow for cleft lip/palate and their families to communicate what they need in their plan of care.
3| Explain the rationale and use of different techniques in secondary cleft palate surgeries.
4| Describe the importance of qualitative research data and patient lived experience to enhance delivery of effective speech therapy for patients with cleft/resonance issues.

Additional Information

Learner Outcome: 

Upon completion of this education, participants will report increased knowledge and confidence in identifying social determinants of health measures that impact health equity during a routine patient evaluation. Participants will report at least one practice change they intend to make as result of this education
