Murmurs in the Diagnosis of Congenital Heart Disease
This course for the interdisciplinary health care team (RN, MD, EMS, and APP) provides a review of heart sounds physiology and ways to describe murmurs. Dr. Tsen discusses murmur examination techniques and the assessment of innocent versus pathologic murmurs. She discusses the key symptoms that guides referrals and referral urgency. Dr. Tsen also presents pediatric murmur case studies and answers questions from the audience.

As a result of this activity, learners will be able to report new knowledge related to murmur evaluation in order to provide current, evidence-based care to pediatric patients.

- Review physiology and practical aspects of the cardiac auscultation exam
- Identify red flag symptoms for critical congenital heart disease (CHD) requiring more urgent referral
- Discuss cases reviewing the presentation and natural history of common CHDs
