Overview and Target Audience

This webinar for nursing teams will include a discussion on the care of children with complex pulmonary diagnoses in the school setting.  Content experts from the Children’s Hospital Colorado Breathing Institute and School Health Nursing team will discuss the care of children with diagnoses including high risk asthma, sleep disordered breathing, tracheostomy and ventilator dependence, and dysphagia. Discussion will focus on complex health management in the school setting.

Learner Outcome

As a result of this activity, learners will report increased knowledge and intent to change practice related to providing current, evidence-based care to pediatric patients will acute and chronic breathing problems.   

Objectives 

  • Discuss benefits of care coordination and communication between school nurses and a student’s healthcare team.  
  • Discuss the role of the school nurse in the care of the student with asthma.
  • Review benefits of practicing good sleep hygiene and implications of poor sleep for students.
  • Review routine and emergency tracheostomy care in the school setting.
  • Define dysphagia and explore best practices for thickening liquids in the school setting using IDDSI (International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative) testing.
