1st Annual Nurses Leading the Way Conference: Session 2 - Leaders as Partners: Nursing Professional Governance in Action

May 11, 2021

Leadership in nursing professional governance operates in a significantly different manner than in traditional hierarchical organizational systems. True professionals operate within the context of a practice community that is unique to the accountability of the profession and the social expectations for its practitioners. Professionals in practice have ownership over their practice. This implies authority for making decisions related to that practice that operates in partnership with the management authority extended by the organization/institution. This session explores the notion of partnership-based leadership and the mechanisms of leadership expression that are implied in it. Scenarios and exemplars which clarify this shared decision-making and staff ownership will be used to demonstrate how this partnership operates. Principles of the leadership of the profession will be identified and explored.

Target Audience

Registered nurses and other health care professionals from UCHealth, Children’s Hospital Colorado, and University of Colorado College of Nursing.

Learning Objectives

Clarify the role of manager as partner in nursing professional governance and the content and characteristics of the manager role.

Distinguish manager accountabilities and the professional’s accountabilities, the locus of control for ownership of those decisions and a demonstration of partner-based leadership as it operates within nursing professional governance structures.

Learner Outcome

Upon completion of this event, nurses will report increased knowledge about partner-based leadership and role expectations in nursing professional governance.
