In Utero Trauma
This training will provide medical CARE Network designated providers with evidence-based guidelines for care and improve both access and quality of care for patients.
Target Audience
CARE Network Medical Designated Providers to include FNEs and other registered nurses trained in the care of child maltreatment.
Learning Objectives
Describe how maternal childhood adversity and stress during pregnancy influence fetal and infant brain development.
Identify early neurobehavioral outcomes associated with maternal adversity, including markers of stress responsivity in infancy.
Discuss evidence from a randomized clinical trial testing whether treatment of prenatal depression can improve birth and infant neurodevelopmental outcomes.
Learner Outcome
- Participants will self-report increased knowledge of how to perform evidence-based high quality medical exams and behavioral health assessments using standard guidelines.
- Participants will self-report increased knowledge related to collaborating with non-medical professionals working on multidisciplinary teams to address child maltreatment.

Presenter: Catherine Demers, PhD
Dr. Catherine Demers is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and a BIRCWH NIH K12 Fellow. Dr. Demers received her PhD in Clinical Psychology at Washington University in St. Louis and completed her internship at the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center. Her research examines neurobiological pathways underlying the intergenerational transmission of maternal adversity and psychiatric illness, with a focus on how exposures during pregnancy shape infant brain development and early behavioral outcomes. Her work integrates longitudinal cohorts and randomized clinical trials to identify mechanisms and potential intervention targets to improve maternal and child health.
