Pediatric Trauma Across the Care Continuum (PTACC) Course

Overview
The PTACC course provides education to nurses who care for admitted pediatric trauma patients. The content was designed to close the identified education gap for this group. The course will feature modules on the following topics as they relate to pediatric trauma: trauma assessment, shock, abdominal, head and spine, musculoskeletal, thoracic, face/neck/eye, burns, and physical abuse. Rotating skills stations will also be available.
Please note, this is an in person course only with no virtual option for attendance available.
Target Audience
This course is for nurses.
Learner Outcome
As a result of this session, learners will be able to report new knowledge and intent to change practice in the care of admitted pediatric trauma patients. Participants will successfully complete a posttest related to the care of admitted pediatric trauma patients.
Learning Objectives
- Apply systematic approach to nursing care of pediatric trauma patients beyond initial resuscitation
- Differentiate between unstable and stable pediatric patients with injuries
- Recognize early signs and anticipate interventions for treatment of shock
- Describe pediatric abdominal assessment and identify pertinent red flags for pediatric abdominal injury
- Describe principles of wound care, operative care, sedation and analgesia
- Apply the principles of a systematic approach to the nursing care of the pediatric trauma patient with injuries to the head and/or spine beyond initial resuscitation
- Describe and perform an appropriate assessment of a child with musculoskeletal injuries and integrate anticipated nursing care into the care plan
- Identify elements of nursing assessment and recognize complications for a patient with thoracic trauma
- Describe assessment parameters specific to children with facial fractures
- List assessment findings that signify an ocular emergency
- Recognize signs and symptoms of suspected child physical abuse
- Anticipate facilitation of a complete child abuse workup and describe communication and documentation strategies
Required Course Preparation
- This course includes a required pre-test and post-test through Society of Trauma Nurses to obtain NCPD (nursing) credit.
- Approximately 4 weeks before the course, you will receive an email from [email protected] titled "PTACC Course 2025-xxx Registration Confirmation and Pre-Test". The link allows you access to the PTACC course slides and pre-test.

- You must complete the pre-test prior to attending the course
