Pediatric Emergency Decontamination Strategies
Overview, Target Audience and Learner Outcome
Pediatrics are often an afterthought when it comes to traumatic events such as Mass Casualty events and decontamination events. This class will take learners through the uniqueness of the pediatric
patient and teach the basic skills and procedures for decontaminating a pediatric patient.
This course aims to reach Emergency Managers, educators and providers who help create plans for their hospitals or facilities in the event of a contamination event.
Following this event, learners will understand the fundamental differences between an adult and pediatric patient as well as have a basic understanding of decontamination.
Objectives
- Discuss basic hazardous materials terms, identification, risks, and confinement.
- Identify the types and limitations of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and demonstrate the proper selection, care, use, and removal of the complete PPE ensemble.
- Review the proper care, maintenance, useful life, and disposal of PPE.
- Demonstrate competency in basic patient decontamination procedures.
