Height: The Fifth Vital Sign. A Practical Approach to the Evaluation of Growth

This course for the interdisciplinary health care team (RN, MD, APP, EMS) provides an overview of growth disorders. Throughout the session, there are case studies for the learner to recognize the difference in normal and abnormal variants of growth patterns. Additionally, Dr Chan addresses when to refer patients to endocrine for further evaluation.

Learner Outcomes

As a result of this activity, learners will be able to report new knowledge and analyze case studies related to growth disorders in order to provide current, evidence-based care to pediatric patients.

  • Develop a strategy for the evaluation of a poorly growing child
  • Recognize the difference in growth patterns between children with normal variants of short stature and pathological causes
  • Describe when to refer patients for further evaluation of growth
