ERAS Society® Pediatrics Virtual Meeting

June 17, 2022

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) has increasingly been embraced by adult surgical specialties and has culminated in a new standard of care for a variety of surgical procedures. To date, however, the concepts of ERAS have been embraced more slowly in the pediatric surgical subspecialties.

ERAS follows a holistic approach to the treatment of surgical patients. Its origins are rooted in the concept that patient outcomes can be improved through the modulation of the physiologic response to surgical stress. In practice, ERAS is a strategy of perioperative management that is defined by strong implementation and ongoing adherence (with the help of a strong auditing process) to a patient-focused, multidisciplinary, and multimodal approach to surgical care.

By bringing together experts from across the globe, we aim to set the stage for widespread implementation of ERAS principles within the pediatric surgical community.

About ERAS Society®

ERAS® is a multimodal perioperative care pathway designed to achieve early recovery for patients undergoing major surgery.

ERAS® represents a paradigm shift in perioperative care in two ways. First, it re-examines traditional practices, replacing them with evidence-based best practices when necessary. Second, it is comprehensive in its scope, covering all areas of the patient’s journey through the surgical process.

The central elements of the ERAS® pathway address these key factors, helping to clarify how they interact to affect patient recovery. In addition, the ERAS® pathway provides guidance to all involved in perioperative care, helping them to work as a well-coordinated team to provide the best care.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this conference, participants should be able to:

  • List common patient-reported outcome measures that can be applied to pediatric surgical care and how to apply them for meaningful impact.
  • Describe how ERAS can be applied to ambulatory pediatric surgical care and compare this to existing inpatient ERAS protocols.
  • Identify where the majority of costs of perioperative care arise and contrast standard care with ERAS protocol-driven care.
  • Review existing and upcoming pediatric ERAS guidelines and discuss their development.
  • List common barriers to ERAS implementation and review common ways to overcome or work around these barriers to start your own protocol.
  • Describe the benefits of multimodal, standardized analgesic pathways and list pros and cons of various approaches used by experts.
  • Define data science and describe how to leverage existing resources to audit existing care processes for continuous improvement efforts.
  • Describe how advanced practice providers are integral to the success of an ERAS pathway.
