Forward18th Biennial Eliza Fernie Pediatric Critical Care Symposium*
Eliza Fernie was well cared for as a child in the Cardiology Department at Children’s Hospital Colorado in the early 1980s. As an adult pursuing her own career now, she and her family continue to be grateful for the care she received. Their aim is to give back by helping pediatric nurses and other members of the healthcare team continue to excel in the clinical setting.
The Eliza Fernie Pediatric Critical Care Symposium is designed to provide evidenced-based critical care updates for registered nurses, respiratory therapists and other team members. After attending this event, participants will be able to report increased knowledge in evidence-based critical care updates.
The overarching conference theme this year is “caring community, humble expertise, generous service, and boundless creativity.” Developed as a part of the Children's Hospital Colorado Values, all that we do is "for a child's sake." Over the two-day conference we will explore the caring community that honors the sacred trust of our patients, families and each other through humble expertise, generous service, and boundless creativity. We will learn about crisis management in trying times. We will examine challenges faced in critical care related to the pandemic and its effect on kids. We will explore other challenges facing the children for whom we care. We will gain clarity on complex cases, and we will participate in some resiliency activities to address self-care.
*The Children's Hospital Colorado leadership team continues to monitor pandemic conditions. Under the guidance of CHCO leadership, the decision has been made to offer this program virtual only.
Target Audience
The program content is targeted to providers, advanced practice provider, registered nurses and healthcare professionals from around the nation who care for critically ill or injured children.

• Identify the seven key aspects of crisis resource management.
• Discuss characteristics of a good leader.
• Describe the current state of Respiratory Care and the effect on Children’s Hospital
Colorado.
• Discuss common neurosurgical diagnoses, procedures, and management in the
pediatric patient.
• Engage the audience in a discussion on the challenges of care escalation and methods to
improve communication.
• Explain how different ECMO cannulation strategies can facilitate rehabilitation and
recovery from respiratory failure due to COVID-19.
• Examine diagnosing and managing MIS-C.
• Describe current substance abuse trends and outline their impact on children and youth.
• Identify key intersections of ethical and legal principles when caring for patients with
complex medical and behavioral health histories.
