Pediatrics and Pulmonary Network: Improving Health Together
Building a North American Pediatrics and Pediatric Pulmonary Network focused on improving child respiratory and sleep health!
This NHLBI-funded (R13) conference serves as a kick-off meeting for the development of the Pediatrics and Pulmonary Network. Building upon the efforts and discussion at the NHLBI Defining and Promoting Pediatric Pulmonary Health (DAP3H) workshop, the Pediatrics and Pulmonary Network will bring together pediatric pulmonologists, sleep medicine experts, general pediatricians, families and community representatives, and other stakeholders to champion a cohesive set of agendas focused on research, dissemination, and advocacy to promote pulmonary and sleep health in children.
This conference will expand upon the priority areas and research opportunities identified at the DAP3H conference by evaluating and prioritizing action items for the developing Pediatrics and Pulmonary Network. All conference participants are asked to actively engage and contribute by:
• Reviewing pre-conference materials and responding to pre-conference questionnaires
• Engaging in panel discussions
• Participating in 1 of 4 interdisciplinary working groups during the conference
• Collaborating in post-conference activities to advance identified action items.
Please review the conference agenda for additional details.
Registration, Lodging, and Other Considerations
Attendance at the conference is currently limited to invitation only. Interested individuals who wish to be considered are asked to complete this form no later than November 12 (please complete the interest form after this date if you are interested in follow-up activities planned by the network and contact hatchjo@email.unc.edu directly if you are hoping to attend the conference).
The conference organizers will review all applications and send follow-up invites in early December. There is no cost to register or attend the conference; however, you will be responsible for your own travel and lodging arrangements (see below).
Important Considerations:
• The conference organizers are pleased to offer junior investigators the opportunity to be considered for a travel award to offset the cost of attendance. These are limited, please indicate your interest in the form linked above.
• A block of rooms are reserved at the Hyatt Regency Hotel across the street from the conference center. Instructions to book with a reduced rate will be provided to invited attendees.
• The in-person conference is subject to cancellation due to weather or other public health concerns (i.e. COVID-19). Please keep this in mind when making any travel arrangements.
• All conference attendees will be subject to the conference Code of Conduct. Please take a moment to review before registering your interest in the conference.

Target Audience
We are seeking early career, mid-level, and senior interdisciplinary investigators (i.e., physician scientists, psychologists, clinical researchers) in general pediatrics, pediatric pulmonology, and sleep medicine to participate in the conference. We are also seeking representatives from the community (parent/patient representatives/other stakeholders). We are especially interested in participation from populations traditionally less engaged in research (e.g., rural settings) and those underrepresented in the biomedical sciences as participants. We are offering 10 travel scholarships to early career investigators interested in attending the conference.
Code of Conduct
Learning Objectives
• Discuss and summarize critical knowledge gaps and key objectives needed to improve pulmonary and sleep health in children.
• Review, explore, and incorporate methods to address current inequities impacting child pulmonary and sleep health in clinical care, training, and research.
• Foster enthusiasm and the success of early-stage investigators through mentoring and leadership opportunities. The Pediatric and Pulmonary Network will pair interested mentor-mentee investigators to work together during and after the conference.
• Establish a series of action plans that the Pediatrics and Pulmonary Network will champion to improve pediatric pulmonary and sleep heath.

8:15-8:50AM | Session 1: Current Gaps in Pediatric Pulmonary and Sleep Health Speaker - Stephanie Davis A high-level review and discussion of the identified barriers/gaps hindering the progression of pediatric pulmonary and sleep health from the 2021 DAP3H NIH Workshop. |
8:50-9:00AM | Break |
9:00-11:30AM Intervening Break at 10:30 – 10:45 between Panels 2 and 3 | Session 2: Panel Discussion: Changing landscapes, Building Bridges, and Embracing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness Facilitator/Introductions – Emily DeBoer Discussions and framing of a common understanding of the current landscape of pediatric pulmonary and sleep health, long and short-term trends, the needs and gaps, and the opportunities for systematic improvement. Each panel will present for ~25 minutes followed by an open discussion for ~20 minutes.
|
11:30-12:00PM | Session 3: Exploring Solutions – The Working Group Roadmap Speakers - Emily DeBoer, Brandon Smith, Kori Flower with Consensus facilitators: Jacqueline McLaughlin and Jacqueline Zeeman Goals for the working groups will be reviewed along with the planned sessions for the rest of the conference as a ‘roadmap’ for each working group. The working groups will identify barriers stifling the advancement of pediatric respiratory and sleep health and then identify action steps to address these barriers. The consensus facilitators will explain the processes and tools that will assist the working groups in arriving at consensus opinions regarding gaps and/or action steps. Gaps and action steps will be prioritized by each working group. |
12:00-1:30PM | Networking Lunch Mentor-Mentee pairs are encouraged to take time during the networking lunch to get to know each other and discuss the mentee’s research goals. |
1:30-1:45PM | Working Group Kickoff Working groups will assemble in break-out rooms. After introductions, working group leads will review the process and answer remaining questions. Working groups will be tasked with identifying detailed priorities related to research, clinical practice guidelines, dissemination, advocacy, and health equity. Working Groups:
|
1:45-4:30PM | Session 4: Working Groups – In-Depth Review and Prioritization of Gaps and Action Steps Working groups will dive into discussion of identified gaps, understanding the root causes, potential interconnectedness, and implications/impact if left unaddressed. Potential action steps and needed resources to address these gaps will be discussed. At @3:00, consensus facilitators will circulate to each working group to collect information from each group regarding barriers/gaps. At @3:30, a web-based tool will be made available to each working group to rank and prioritize each barrier/gap based on the following:
Consensus facilitators will summarize the results and provide these findings to each group. If a second-round of voting is required after initial review of the results, it may be undertaken. NOTE: full consensus about the relative importance of each gap is not required, this initial process is to generate general agreement regarding the relative importance of the gaps and to inform later discussions about action steps. Once the relative importance of each gap has been established, the working group is asked to begin more in-depth discussions about action steps, starting with the highest-priority gaps. |
4:30-5:00PM | Steering Committee, Working Group Facilitators, and Delphi Facilitators Reconvene to Review Day 1 This session is a preparatory discussion for the opening of Day 2. The working group leads will share with the group the discussions, highlight areas of cross-pollination between the working groups, and discuss larger-scale impacts and action steps. |
