Colorado Pediatric Emergency and Trauma Conference 2023
Overview
The Colorado Pediatric Emergency and Trauma conference provides education for state-of-the-art care of the pediatric trauma patient in both the pre-hospital setting and through the continuum of inpatient care.

Target Audience
This program will be of interest to physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, EMS providers, aeromedical personnel and ancillary staff.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze end-of-life care decisions and how they impact patients, families, and the healthcare team.
- Plan optimal treatment for pediatric traumatic pneumothorax patients prior to transport.
- Discuss the different approaches and objectives of traumatic mechanisms.
- Debate where and when point-of-care ultrasound should be performed.
- Examine the pearls and pitfalls to pediatric TBI management and discuss critical prehospital considerations.
- Discuss tangible tools to build awareness of stress on a continuum, identify actionable steps to mitigate its impact, and explore systemic barriers that prevent recovery and resiliency.
- Examine impacts of traumatic stress and grief on the stress response.
- List appropriate car seats for children as they grow and discuss hospital resources available to our patients, crash replacement, adaptive car seats for children with specific travel needs and counterfeit car seats.
- Plan to educate a hospital on Mass casualty policies and procedures.
- Describe management strategies for recognizing and addressing several common pediatric conundrums in the prehospital and interfacility transport setting.
- Review airway and respiratory management of the critically injured child.
- Appraise the basic EMS management concepts, examine new and exciting developments in prehospital management, and review best practices for caring for seizures.
- Examine the core components of a level 1 verified trauma center, and the detailed process and intended outcome of a PIPS program.
- Identify sentinel type injuries for child abuse and understand the recommended medical workup.
- Assess why pediatric readiness matters and what resources are available through the Colorado EMS for Children program.
- Review optimal management of acute hemorrhage in the pediatric trauma patient.
- Discuss common neonatal diagnoses in the first 28 days of life.
- Review best practices in information handoff for trauma patients.
- Describe the appropriate management of burned patients with varying severity of injury.
- Review relevant clinical markers that portend outcomes after moderate to severe brain injury.
- Discuss the role of whole blood in resuscitating pediatric trauma patients.
Learner Outcome
Learners will self-report expanded knowledge of care of traumatized patients and identify available resources for pediatric trauma care to be brought back to their areas of practice.
