Sports Medicine: Injuries in Gymnastics
This presentation will review the common injuries seen in artistic gymnastics as well as prevention and treatment strategies for these injuries. Common gymnastics terminology will also be discussed.

Dr. Emily Sweeney, MD

Emily Sweeney is a pediatric sports medicine physician at Children’s Hospital Colorado. She completed her undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Missouri and did a pediatric residency at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. She completed her sports medicine fellowship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio before coming to Colorado in 2015. As a former level 10 gymnast, Dr. Sweeney has a special interest in caring for injured gymnasts in the clinical setting. Her research focuses on injury prevention and treatment of young gymnasts. She is also the director of quality improvement for the Sports Medicine Center at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Dr. Sweeney will present on evaluation and treatment of common injuries in gymnastics and provide an overview of common gymnastics terminology.
Children’s Hospital Colorado is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers. This program is eligible for a maximum of 1 Category A hours/CEUs. ATs should claim only those hours spent in the educational program.
