30th Annual Abby Stoddard Lectureship in Pediatric Neurology
The Abby Stoddard Lectureship and Visiting Professorship at Children's Hospital Colorado provides faculty physicians, residents, fellows, nurses and other healthcare providers from Children's Hospital and throughout the Rocky Mountain Region healthcare community an opportunity to observe and discuss the latest clinical cases in pediatric neurology, neuroradiology, childhood stroke, hematology, pediatric neuro-intensive care, and rehabilitation.
The 30th Annual Abby Stoddard Lectureship is delighted to have Dr. Amy Brooks-Kayal as this year's guest lecturer. Dr. Brooks-Kayal and her colleagues and collaborators are at the forefront of research that explores the underlying cellular mechanisms of seizures and epilepsy.
Over the course of this two-day lectureship, Dr. Brooks-Kayal will discuss her research and how it has helped develop strategies for treating and managing patients as well as effects of experimentally induced brain injury, the progress being made in the development of precision, epilepsy treatments, and potential disease-modifying treatments that may affect positively cognitive and neuropsychiatric co-morbid conditions that are prevalent in children with epilepsy.
Target Audience
This education program is intended for physicians, fellows, residents, students, advanced practice providers and nurses who have an interest in pediatric neurology.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this conference, participants should be able to
- List important neurotransmitters and transmitter receptors related to development of genetic and posttraumatic infantile and childhood seizures and epilepsy syndromes.
- Identify several newly described genes related to epilepsy and how alterations in these genes my inhibit the progression of epilepsy and improve cognition and behavior.
- Define the rationale for new, targeted therapies in the treatment of pediatric epilepsy.
- Analyze and evaluate the challenges associated with recruiting and supporting pediatric physician scientists, including funding, work-life balance, and career development opportunities.
