Dixon Focused Health Initiative- May 22,2025

Aurora, CO US
May 22, 2025

Overview

Borne out of the crucial need to have the lived experience of community members inform how healthcare providers address issues of equity in healthcare settings, specifically the huge disparities among marginalized patients and families, Children's Hospital Colorado's Dixon Focused Health Initiative partnered with the Center for Advancing Professional Excellence (CAPE) within the University of Colorado School of Medicine to develop a learning experience based on scenarios from actual community member encounters. Community members come from diverse populations including, Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino/a/x/e, Indigenous or Alaskan Native, Asian American and Pacific Islander, White, LGBTQ+, and more.

This unique and innovative approach pairing providers and community advocates shines a light on the challenges in clinical settings and helps to bridge the gaps that can disrupt the patterns of adverse patient experiences yielding poor patient outcomes, by engaging the learner in practice-based simulations. Providers and advocates are immersed in real-life situations that increase an appreciation for the needs of patients while building adaptive communication skills leading to more culturally responsive care.
