Early Identification of Autism for Pediatric Providers: STAT-MD
Families seeking autism evaluations frequently face long wait times due to limited specialist capacity, highlighting the need for primary care providers (PCPs) to play a greater role in early identification. Although PCPs are often the first to hear developmental concerns, many report limited training and low confidence in diagnosing autism and guiding families through next steps.
This course equips PCPs with the knowledge and skills to recognize clear signs of autism, use the Screening Tool for Autism in Toddlers (STAT), and integrate diagnostic workflows into everyday practice. Participants will learn ASD diagnostic criteria, practice administering and scoring all 12 STAT subtests, and develop a plan to implement the tool within their clinical setting. The training addresses gaps in knowledge, competence, performance, and ultimately patient outcomes by expanding timely access to autism evaluation and support.
Target Audience
Primary care providers, including pediatricians, family medicine physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants involved in the care of children and adolescents.
Learning Objectives
1| Identify and explain the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder based on current evidence and guidelines.
2| Demonstrate proficiency in administering and accurately scoring the 12 subtests of the STAT protocol.
3| Develop and implement a practical plan for integrating the STAT tool into clinical workflows within their home practice setting.
