Evaluating the Newborn for Critical Congenital Heart Disease
This course for the interdisciplinary health care team (RN, MD, APP, EMS) provides an overview of the symptomatic clinical presentations of newborn critical congenital heart disease (CHD). The course also includes a case study where “symptomatic vs asymptomatic” presentation is discussed.

Learner Outcomes
As a result of this activity, learners will be able to report new knowledge related to management of congenital heart disease in order to provide current, evidence-based care to pediatric patients.
Learning Objectives
- Recognize the three symptomatic presentations of critical congenital heart disease (CHD)
- Utilize a framework to assess patients for cardiac causes of the three symptomatic presentations: cyanosis, hypoperfusion, and tachypnea/failure to thrive
- Apply "symptomatic versus asymptomatic" schema to a clinical case to determine if a patient has critical CHD
