ForwardPerioperative TeamSTEPPS Training - Session 2 - April 9
Exclusive to Children's Colorado Perioperative Team.
After participating in this education, learners will be able to apply TeamSTEPPS communication and teamwork strategies to improve interprofessional collaboration, enhance psychological safety, and reduce risk to patients during routine and high-risk clinical situations. Learners are expected to actively participate in the training, complete a case study analysis, and complete a successful return demonstration of new communication techniques.
Target Audience
This course, for all periop nurses and other members of the periop team, is designed to enhance communication and teamwork amongst staff, physicians, and providers to improve workplace culture and enhance safe patient care.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the core principles of Team Strategies & Tools to Enhance Performance & Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) and the characteristics of high-performing healthcare teams that support patient safety.
- Identify situational red flags that signal increased risk for adverse events and require escalation of concerns.
- Demonstrate the use of standardized communication tools (e.g., ISBARRQ) to clearly convey critical patient information during crucial conversations.
- Apply stop-the-line statements to assertively address patient safety concerns across professional roles and hierarchies.
- Utilize structured team problem-solving and decision-making strategies to improve coordination and shared accountability for patient care.
- Provide and receive constructive performance feedback to reinforce effective teamwork behaviors and support a culture of continuous improvement.
