"We are not small adults!": Youth Athletes Deserve Specialized Care
SPORTS MEDICINE CENTER
Pediatric and adolescent athletes possess unique physiological characteristics related to growth and development, making them more susceptible to sports-related injuries. Unfortunately, these young athletes are often treated as "small adults," leading to gaps in care due to limited understanding of their distinct needs. This event aims to equip healthcare providers with critical knowledge of developmental physiology, growth plate injuries, sports biomechanics, and the cultural dynamics of youth sports. Attendees will gain the tools to deliver safe and effective treatment, enabling young athletes to recover fully and return to their activities with confidence.
Target Audience
Physical Therapists, Athletic Trainers, Strength and Conditioning Coaches and students
Learning Objectives
- Review common pediatric and adolescent sport diagnoses and the developmental physiology of these conditions.
- Identify sport specific biomechanical stresses and the common mechanism of injuries to diagnose and treat young athletes.
- Assess youth physical development to help understand better approaches to youth athlete training.
- Develop motor learning and strength and conditioning approaches to better prepare young athletes to return to training for their sport.
