LIVE OUTREACH IN-PERSON ACTIVITY

Overview and Target Audience
This symposium is for interdisciplinary healthcare team members caring for pediatric patients in an emergency and pre-hospital setting. Current clinical issues and implications for children's health and clinician care delivery are presented and discussed.
This symposium will be held at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with an in person only attendance option. No virtual links are provided for this event.
Learner Outcomes
After attending this education, learners will:
- Report new knowledge related to evidence-based emergency and trauma care management for pediatric patients.
- Explain pediatric management strategies through case studies.
Objectives
- Summarize the key differences between pediatric and adult anatomy and physiology that impact assessment.
- Discuss initial management of pediatric patients presenting with respiratory distress and failure.
- Identify the clinical presentation and describe initial management of various over the counter medication overdoses and household product ingestions.
- Identify the clinical presentation of pediatric diabetic ketoacidosis and apply evidence‑based principles of initial management, including fluid resuscitation, insulin therapy, and monitoring for complications such as cerebral edema.
- Review the current guidelines for management of pediatric head trauma.
- Illustrate guidelines and treatment options specific to intraabdominal trauma care and stabilization.
- Discuss presentation, evaluation, and management of pediatric sepsis.
- Discuss three ways to improve your outcomes in pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Review the initial stabilization, medical, and surgical management of pediatric spine injury.
- Describe how evidence-based guidelines and situational judgment are applied in real trauma cases.
- Identify the clinical presentation and describe initial management of rattlesnake envenomation and latrodectus (black widow) spider envenomation.
- Identify key strategies to prepare and protect the EMS and hospital workforce during pediatric infectious disease outbreaks, including early recognition, readiness and preparedness strategies, triage and post-exposure prophylaxis.
- Apply pediatric emergency and trauma knowledge in a game.
- Discuss first line management for active seizure activity.
- Identify immediate management priorities, intermediate term care planning, and options for external assistance in the care of the extended-stay pediatric trauma patient.
- Identify strategies for embedding pediatric considerations into adult hospital protocols and processes.
- Recognize the clinical presentation, risk factors, and time sensitive interventions required for prompt management of oncologic emergencies.
- Identify immediate threats to life, provide initial resuscitative care, and initial wound care to pediatric burn patients.
- Recognize cyanotic congenital heart disease and identify initial management strategies.
- Discuss differential diagnosis, evaluation and management of pediatric patients presenting with emergent complaints to a pediatric emergency department.

Cancelation and Refund Policy
A registration refund, minus a $10.00 cancellation fee, will be issued if the cancellation request is received at least 14 calendar days prior to the activity date. No refunds will be granted after this deadline or for non-attendance. However, a substitute may attend in your place if you notify the conference coordinator at least three days before the activity.
